Colorado Sports Betting Sees Table Tennis and UFC Dominate Its Books

The first week of Colorado sportsbook was dominated by UFC event and table tennis as the newly launched market eyed revenue in the absence of traditional sporting events.

DraftKings reveals popular sports

According to DraftKings, the most popular game to bet on was table tennis, which was on top in terms of volume as well as dollar amounts bet during the month. Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was the second most popular sporting event. UFC hosted its first fight this week after March, which brought some cheer to the sports betting enthusiasts. The UFC match was held between Justin Gaethe and Tony Ferguson. Other sportsbooks, FanDuel and BetRivers, also noted a rise in wagering activity with this event.

Other popular events were Korean baseball and Belarus Premier League Soccer.

Rush Street Interactive’s chief operating officer Mattis Stetz said,

“We don’t have previous Colorado data to compare it to, but in our other markets, we received more betting action on this event than any regular-season NFL game. It was even 33% more popular than Conor McGregor’s return to UFC this past January.”

Rush Street operates the BetRivers sportsbook in the state, which is one of the four mobile sportsbooks launched in the state this month.

The UFC match was the most popular event for FanDuel in Colorado to date. Kevin Hennessy, the director of publicity at FanDuel said that the UFC event was followed by table tennis. They have bets on future NFL games as well as NASCAR gaming events.

FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetRivers didn’t specify their sports betting handles for the events. However, the Division of Gaming, which operates as part of the Department of Revenue, is expected to release monthly reports like its peers. Its communications manager Suzi Karrer said that the Division doesn’t have data for the first 10 days of betting in the state yet.

Sports betting industry analyst for PennBets.com, Chris Altruda, said that the UFC was a high-profile event with familiar athletes. Therefore, there is no doubt that it was popular amongst sportsbooks. Such events usually draw in casual bettors as well. Table tennis and Korean football are more obscure events but they could gain some traction. He also suggests that even with improved visibility, it is unlikely that the amounts wagered on these events will match the handles of other leagues.
