West Virginia gaming regulator has authorized the Hollywood Casino in Charles Town to proceed with its intentions to become cashless. The said casino is owned by Gaming and Leisure Properties and operated by US casino giant Penn National Gaming.

Penn National Gaming Casinos going cashless

Penn National Gaming’s land-based gaming sites in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan have already embraced cashless gaming. The Hollywood Casino intends to become cashless as part of a broader plan, including all of the company’s casinos. 

The commission members addressed the casino’s plan at their previous meeting, and although some spoke in support of it, others, such as commission chair Ken Greear, were skeptical and wanted to be sure it was the proper decision before granting final permission. 

It is just a question of ensuring that the players do not encounter anything that hinders their enjoyment of the game or anything that does not function properly, as mentioned by Greear. 

Doug Bicksler argued in support of the plan, arguing that becoming cashless could not be “more difficult than cash,” but Roy Shrewsbury wanted to “see it in action” to have a “better sense.”

Cashless Transactions Must Be Seen in Operation

The consensus of the commissioners was that the project should proceed, but they wanted to see it in operation before giving their final permission. 

According to estimates, Penn National’s testing procedure will take many months, and video lottery machines will also need adjustment. Scott Saunders, vice president and general manager of Hollywood Casino at Charles Town, anticipates that the casino will go cashless by the end of the year. Saunders, who talked to the reporting media, also said that people would grow more used to cashless gambling as they have experience with it. 

According to industry analysts Darren Simmons and Omer Sattar, cashless gaming will cause gamers to spend more in casinos. During a panel discussion devoted to the future of cashless payments, the two talked at the AGS GameON Customer Summit and revealed their ideas. Simmons, executive vice president of Every Holdings, and Sattar, co-chief executive officer of Sightline Payments, concur that, despite the development of cashless gaming, real currency will not be abolished from gaming floors in the foreseeable future.
