Union Reiterates Strike Readiness Unless Better Conditions Met
Members of the Canadian Unifor union who work in the gaming and hotel industries may go on strike if new agreements are not reached by midnight on Friday, July 22. Currently, the union is attempting to negotiate improved working conditions for workers at eight GCGC casinos who work in slot machines, table games, food and beverage, security, and other professions. The advantages that Unifor aims to negotiate include the prioritization of salaries and pensions. In addition, the union intends to negotiate the conversion of temporary or part-time employment into full-time positions.
As the biggest private sector union in Canada, Unifor today represents around 315,000 employees from various industries. In addition to seeking improved working conditions, the union campaigns for employees’ equal rights. Unifor Local 504 represents 275 employees at Elements Casino Mohawk and 300 workers at Elements Casino Brantford on behalf of Unifor. Unifor Local 504 also represents members at Elements Casino Flamboro. Unifor Local 252 represents thirty security personnel at Elements Casino Mohawk. The unions together represent more than 1,800 workers at eight separate GCGC locations.
The Union seeks to assist casino employees
The president of Unifor Local 1090, Corey Dalton, spoke on the subject as follows: ”They appreciate its customers and the connections they have developed with its visitors over the years.” He said that strong salaries and perks for casino employees translate directly into job happiness, which is good for business.
Lana Payne, the national secretary-treasurer of Unifor, noted that after the pandemic shutdown, the business began to recover financially, which assisted casino workers. According to her, the objective of Unifor is to assist casino workers who contribute to their success.
