Premier League Clubs Will Vote for Front-Shirt Sponsorship Ban

The Times published a fresh article on Monday that suggests Premier League teams may provide the necessary backing for a ban on jersey sponsorship. According to a recent report, Premier League teams are willing to voluntarily support such a ban, which requires the support of 14 of the top 20 football clubs. The top-flight teams have launched a voluntary ban on jersey sponsorship.

It comes at a time when government officials have suggested that such a provision may be included in the current review of the Gambling Act of 2005. However, rather than wait for politicians to impose limitations or prohibit shirt sponsorships, Premier League teams may elect to remove gambling emblems off the front of their jerseys voluntarily.

Still, there would be a transition time, even if the majority of top-tier English football teams approve this prohibition. In other words, if a voluntary ban is accepted, the clubs will have a three-year transition time. During this time, teams with current contracts will have sufficient time to achieve their expiration, which cannot occur until the start of the 2024-2025 football season.

Additional sponsorship opportunities continue to exist

The voluntary shirt restriction may only affect Premier League teams’ front-of-shirt sponsorships. Therefore, the clubs have yet to debate and confirm the effects of the suspension.

Although the voluntary jersey ban would eliminate a cash source for the football teams, it may not be a major issue. Even if the clubs opt for the front-of-shirt restriction, further sponsorship alternatives may still exist.

This implies that Premier League teams may continue to receive cash from gambling sponsorships, including logos that may be shown on the shorts of players, on-screen, or in-stadium.
