The Great Canadian Gaming Corporation and Unifor, which is Canada’s biggest private sector union, have come to an agreement in principle that would hopefully avoid any strikes from taking place in the near future.

The signatories are Canada-based casinos Great Blue Heron Casino, Casino Woodbine, Shorelines Casino Thousand Islands, and Shorelines Casino Peterborough, as well as the security staff at Elements Casino Mohawk and Elements Casino Brantford.

Unifor inks deals with six GCGC

Next the membership ratification votes that are scheduled to take place over the following week, more information will be made available. The threat of action was made the previous week, and it was originally scheduled to begin on July 22 at midnight. Workers at table games, slot machines, security, cashiering, food and beverage, kitchen and culinary, guest services, cleaning, and maintenance were believed to be the reason why pay, benefits, and pensions were given the highest priority.

It has been a very trying era for casino employees, and these preliminary agreements are a start in the right way. It is stated that workers in the gaming business were important in ensuring that GCGC casinos revived after the COVID-19 shut-downs. The Great Blue Heron Casino, Casino Woodbine, Shorelines Casino Thousand Islands, and Shorelines Casino Peterborough, as well as the security staff at Elements Casino Mohawk and Elements Casino Brantford, have all signed the agreements.

Attempting to reach an Agreement despite of the Strike Up

It was reported that committees from two different sites were still attempting to reach an agreement up until the previous weekend, despite the fact that Unifor members at Pickering Casino Resort and Casino Ajax had been on strike up until that point. This week, the coordinated negotiating tables for Unifor members working at GCGC properties got together in Toronto to discuss ways to raise pay, benefits, and pensions for their employees.

The negotiators representing Unifor were also working toward the goal of decreasing the employer’s dependency on part-time work.

Unifor is a labor union that represents 315,000 employees, and its website states that the organization “strives to achieve progressive change for a brighter future,” “advocates for all working people and their rights,” and “fights for equality and social justice in Canada and internationally.”

A total of roughly 1,500 gambling industry employees are represented by Unifor Local 1090. These employees are located at the Great Blue Heron Casino, Casino Woodbine, Pickering Casino Resort, Casino Ajax, Shorelines Casino Thousand Islands, and Shorelines Casino Peterborough. In addition, Unifor Local 252 is the union that represents all thirty of the security staff members at Elements Casino Mohawk. There are a total of 275 employees at Elements Casino Mohawk (slots) and Elements Casino Flamboro that are represented by Unifor Local 504, along with 300 workers at Elements Casino Brantford who have a strike mandate.
