As reported by gaming and lottery authorities last week, sports betting is finally proceeding at three Maryland locations. 

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission has issued sports wagering licenses to Maryland Stadium Sub, which aims to build a sportsbook at FedEx Field, and Chesapeake Gaming, which operates an off-track betting facility in Boonsboro.

Three New Licensed Sports Betting Defined by SWARC

In addition, the commission determined that Betfred Sports, the operator of Long Shot’s in Frederick, was eligible for a license to operate a sports betting facility. A month earlier, their alliance had been announced. The Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC) will evaluate the credentials of Maryland Stadium Sub and Chesapeake Gaming after receiving their applications. Licenses might be granted as soon as the August 17 meeting of SWARC.

Maryland Stadium Sub and Chesapeake Gaming are among the 17 businesses permitted to handle sports betting across the state. Six of these companies, including MGM National Harbor in Prince George’s County, Live! Casino in Anne Arundel County, Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore City, Hollywood Casino in Cecil County, Ocean Downs Casino in Worcester County, and Bingo World in Anne Arundel County, are now operational. Betfred was granted a license to operate a sports betting business in December. It is one of three off-track venues awaiting facility modifications or operational needs prior to launching their sportsbooks. There is currently no opening date set for any of them.

Maryland Closer in Starting Sports Betting Markets

Rush Street Interactive (RSI) launched its BetRivers retail sportsbook in Maryland last week in cooperation with Bingo World. The 3,000-square-foot facility has 12 self-service kiosks and three over-the-counter machines. 

The state’s sportsbooks will donate 15% of their profits to school financing. According to the Commission, the Department of Legislative Services of the General Assembly anticipates that casinos will contribute between $15 million and $25 million annually for schools. By a margin of 2 to 1, Marylanders voted in favor of legalizing sports betting during the 2020 election.

The state of Maryland is also inching closer to starting online sports betting after the SWARC approved the necessary laws and applications last month. 

Nonetheless, it is possible that the market may not be operational until the middle of the NFL season, missing the season’s start and first weeks. In an attempt to accelerate launch, the SWARC has revised its license requirements.
