Mobile Sports Betting in Maryland

The agreement was announced as the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC) held its most recent meeting, with Jim Nielsen, deputy director and chief operating officer of the State Lottery & Gaming Control Agency, expressing optimism that mobile betting will be available “early next year.”

On the same day, the Orioles announced a partnership with SuperBook Sports for the 2023 opening of a retail sports bar inside Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Once permitted, fans will be able to make wagers on mobile devices at the arena. 

According to the team’s announcement, this sports lounge remains “subject to license and authorization from the Maryland & Gaming Control Commission.” 

The press statement referred to the collaboration between the Orioles and SuperBook Sports as a “long-term cooperation,” although the agreement’s parameters were not finished. The Orioles’ contract with the Maryland Stadium Authority, their landlord, ends at the conclusion of the next year. 

The betting room will have food and beverages, as well as space for bettors to watch the games. Other information about the SuperBook Sports Lounge, such as its location inside the stadium complex, will be disclosed at a later date.

According to the referenced source, the Commission also authorized a sports wagering facility license for Maryland Stadium Sub, which aims to build a sportsbook at FedEx Field in Prince George’s County, home of the NFL’s Washington Commanders. The corporation is owned by Dan Snyder, the principal owner of the Commanders.

Governor Larry Hogan has been pushing for the introduction of online sports betting for some time, sending a letter to SWARC in June requesting that the Commission expedite the process and have online sports betting operational as soon as feasible. 

In 2020, Maryland voters supported the legalization of sports betting, and Hogan signed the measure into law in 2021. Since then, casinos have introduced sportsbooks, but mobile wagering has yet to be introduced.

Hogan had previously encouraged authorities to have mobile betting operational in time for the start of the NFL season in the autumn, but his most recent comments suggest that this may not be possible. While most states begin within eight to twelve months, Maryland’s schedule may reach two years.
