SWARC supports rolling licensing for mobile gambling.

The Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC) approved on Thursday to begin issuing licenses for online sportsbooks on a rolling basis. This altered the mobile sports betting forecast from a precise date to a gradual market launch. Due to SWARC’s latest ruling, some operators may debut their services as early as this year, despite original estimates that the mobile betting industry wouldn’t open until sometime in 2019.

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency initiated the licensing process for mobile and retail operators earlier this month. This allowed SWARC to begin evaluating submissions.

The Commission has 45 days to consider all applications filed. Therefore, the deadline for operators to submit applications has been set for October 21, 2022. Rolling out mobile sports betting sounds like a fantastic idea; but, there is one condition. The issuance of licenses on a rolling basis is predicated on the Commission receiving less than sixty applications by the October application deadline.

Mobile betting could arrive in time for the Super Bowl

In November 2020, Maryland people voted in favor of legalizing sports betting. The activity was then approved in May 2021, although the retail market did not open until December of the previous year. Six retail establishments throughout the state currently provide retail sports betting.

Maryland’s sports lovers have eagerly awaited the introduction of mobile betting for some time. If there are no glitches and the SWARC begins awarding licenses on a rolling basis, mobile sports betting might be available in time for the Super Bowl. FanDuel, PointsBet, and Caesars, to name a few, are likely to be among the first operators to provide mobile sports betting in the state.

Currently, the American Gaming Association (AGA) reports that sports betting is active and legal in 31 states and the District of Columbia. Conversely, five states have allowed the activity but have not yet implemented it. AGA discloses that three US states lack active legislation enabling sports betting, while legislation in ten other states is currently dead.
