The Governor of Wisconsin inks Revised Gaming Compact

Robert VanZile Jr., chairman of the Sokaogon Chippewa Community, and Tony Evers, governor of Wisconsin, amended the agreement last week. 

If authorized, the agreement will permit the Tribe to offer gambling on sporting events at its Mole Lake Casino & Lodge. In addition, if the revised gambling agreement is authorized, the Sokaogon Chippewa Community would be able to offer sports betting at other locations within its reservation.

In order to facilitate the new activity, the modified gaming compact modifies the restrictions and permits the Tribe to offer sports and another event wagering. Although the agreement has already been signed, regulatory approval is still required. Now, the US Department of the Interior has 45 days to evaluate the modified gaming compact.

This is not the first deal of this type that Governor Evens has signed. In actuality, he had already signed similar gaming agreements with the Oneida Nation, the Las Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, the Forest County Potawatomi, and the St. Croix Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin. 

Considering the timeframe for assessment by the US Department of the Interior, the Sokaogon Chippewa Community’s mobile wagering may arrive just in time for the Super Bowl, if not earlier.

The Revised Gaming Compact is Anticipated to Generate Benefits

Currently, the Office of Indian Gaming and Regulatory Compliance (OIGRC) of the Department of Administration regulates and audits Tribal operators. This organization also monitors the regulatory compliance of such operators and controls the operations of Wisconsin’s eleven federally recognized tribes.

Kathy Blumenfeld, secretary of the Department of Agriculture, believes that implementing sports betting with the Sokaogon Chippewa Community will benefit both the tribe and the state. She recognized that the DOA is looking forward to further collaboration with the Tribe.

Governor Evers noted that the amended gaming compact will be advantageous for both the state and the tribe. In addition, he noted that the agreement will enhance tourism and create new jobs.

Chairman VanZile of the Sokaogon Chippewa Community noted that the new partnership will stimulate the economy of both the tribe and the state. He explained that the tribe looks forward to greater collaboration with Wisconsin. 

Last but not least, Chairman VanZile characterized the amended gaming agreement as historic and predicted that it will benefit all parties involved.
