Implementing Change for Necessary Modifications

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) initially notified licensed operators of the impending change in June, giving them sufficient time to implement the necessary modifications.

Doug Harbach, a spokesperson for the PGCB, described how multi-factor authentication would function.

2FA Employed Every 14 Days

The multi-factor authentication will need to be activated every two weeks, regardless of player activity. In addition, independent third parties will annually evaluate the security of these 2FA measures and report their findings to PGCB.

The state’s gaming operators will also be required to encrypt players’ personal information to ensure their safety. Additionally, these security measures will be tested four times per year.

Unibet, FanDuel, and other operators in the state have already begun contacting their registered customers to inform them of the forthcoming changes. Moreover, operators such as BetPARX have successfully implemented the new multi-factor technology on their platforms.

Uncomplicated Implementation of 2FA in New Jersey

The introduction of the additional layer of protection that ensures the security of online accounts beyond simple usernames and passwords is not a response to the recent proliferation of fraud issues reported by operators.

PGCB issued the directive in the summer, the same month that New Jersey regulators mandated two-factor authentication for all forms of mobile and online gambling.

According to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, very few to no complaints have been filed by gambling customers since the Implementation of the new authentication method. When authenticating via email, gamblers who did not own smartphones were able to overcome minor obstacles. The DGE pledged to locate alternative opportunities for these players.

More Easy and Efficient Identifying and Preventive Fraud Attempts

By implementing 2FA, gaming operators in Pennsylvania can anticipate having an easier time identifying and preventing fraud attempts. In addition, players are advised to continue taking the necessary precautions for safe and seamless online gambling experiences, such as avoiding the reuse of passwords across multiple accounts.

After entering their login information, the 2FA sends a passcode via text message to players attempting to access their online accounts. The passcode must be entered into the player’s gambling app for complete account access.

The subsequent authentication request will begin in 14 days. Players attempting to log in from multiple devices will be required to repeat the 2FA process.
