Following a vote, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission decided to grant Fanatics’ application for a temporary license to operate a sports betting business.

The commissioners gave their unanimous approval to Fanatics’ application for a category 3 sports betting operator license. This license will be linked to the category 1 sports wagering license held by Plainridge Park Casino.

Plans to Introduce Retail Sports Betting 

To begin taking sports wagers, the company will first be required to submit to a comprehensive suitability review conducted by the Investigations and Enforcement Bureau of the MGC. 

After this review has been completed, the company will then be requested to present an operations certificate and meet additional conditions before it can start taking bets.

After ”several public sessions” of the MGC, during which Fanatics presented and Commissioners analyzed the entity’s proposal, the Commission voted in favor of granting approval. 

Fanatics also consented to the approval of an internal responsible gaming plan and promised to supply the MGC with a copy of that plan. The company made the announcement earlier this month that it will use Amelco’s source code to run its sports betting offering in the state. 

The preliminary permission comes as a result of that announcement. On January 31, the MGC plans to introduce retail sports betting at Category 1 licensees, while online and mobile betting are planned to follow in March.

”FBG will launch its online wagering platform in the first quarter of 2023,” the company announced in a statement earlier this month. The company will deploy that product to the majority of legal online wagering states before September 2023,” the statement continued.

Ohio and Maryland were rumored to be the locations of upcoming launches. Fanatics had already obtained preliminary approval in both countries, which means that it is possible that one of the two marketplaces may make its debut during the first quarter of this year. 

In the same breath, the Maryland Gaming Commission (MGC) announced that it has appointed Bruce Band to head up its new sports wagering division. 

In this role, Mr. Band will be responsible for overseeing the new division as well as coordinating with other MGC divisions such as research and responsible gaming, information technology, legal, and the Investigations and Enforcement Bureau.
