North Dakota: Bill to Legalize Sports Betting Now in the Senate

North Dakota

The battle for legalizing commercial sports betting in North Dakota is underway after House Concurrent Resolution 3002 was sent to the Senate by the House.

The state of North Dakota is moving forward with its efforts to make it legal for businesses to engage in sports betting. At this time, only businesses owned by Native American tribes are permitted to operate within the state and sell products related to sports betting.

Strengthening the Commercial Betting

A hearing request on House Concurrent Resolution 3002 was made by Greg Stemen, a congressman from Fargo, and it was received by the House Judiciary Committee a few days ago.

The goal of this measure is to change section 25 of article 11 of the Constitution of North Dakota, which currently reads as follows:

As a consequence of the bill, which would have first to be passed by the Senate and then by the people before it could become a reality, the state would see the introduction of commercial sports betting.

Even though the House Judiciary Committee does not appear to support the legislation, the Senate and the people of North Dakota will make the final decision.

Following the hearing in the House, the bill has now been sent to the Senate for consideration. If it were to receive approval, then it would be put to the vote by the general population before finally being passed. The citizens of North Dakota can anticipate seeing the proposition on the ballot for the general election in 2024 if the Senate decides to approve the proposal.

The Measure Enjoys Widespread Support

With the passage of House Concurrent Resolution 3002, the state of North Dakota would join the ranks of those states that have legalized and regulated commercial sports betting. At this time, the proposal is supported by a total of 12 lawmakers, 11 of whom are Republicans and one of whom is a Democrat.

After numerous failed attempts in previous years to legalize commercial sports betting in the state of Washington’s Peace Garden, this is the most recent attempt to do so. For instance, North Dakota made two separate attempts to legalize sports betting in 2019 and 2021, but neither one was successful in getting very far.

North Dakota Trying to Make Betting on Sports Legal for Businesses

It is not yet known whether this attempt will be different from those that have been made in the past. According to Stemen, who was the one who suggested the bill, it is essential to develop a type of wagering that is both legal and controlled.

He pointed out that people are already gambling with unregistered operators, which results in a loss of revenue for the government and no protections for customers.

Stemen emphasized that the existence of a legal and controlled alternative would be necessary in order to prevent the continued growth of the black market.

Additionally, the advocate for commercial betting stated that North Dakota would benefit greatly from the taxes collected by legalized sports betting. According to the estimates of industry analysts, the state might receive tax revenue of up to $3.5 million from the legalization of sports betting.

Some people believe that Stemen’s statements make logic, while others continue to aggressively oppose the legalization of sports betting on the grounds that it could lead to an increase in the number of people who have problems with gambling and could encourage fraud in professional sports.
