The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board held a vote last week to decide whether or not to grant SC Gaming a Category 4 slot machine license. This will allow SC Gaming to build a new casino in Pennsylvania located in College Township, Centre County, at a cost of $127.6 million.

The casino will be run by Bally’s Corporation and have a total of 750 slot machines, 30 table games, a retail facility for sports betting, a stage for live music and other special events, as well as outlets for quick-serve food and beverages.

Nittany Mall – the Home of New Casino in Pennsylvania

The first phase of construction is expected to cost $35 million, and it is expected that the facility will support 350 full-time equivalent construction jobs.

It is anticipated that the new casino in Pennsylvania will eventually be able to provide job opportunities for 350 persons on a full-time equivalent basis. The opening date has not been determined at this time; however, officials from SC Gaming have informed the board that they anticipate construction to take around one year to complete once it gets underway.

The award concludes a process that the board started in September 2020.At that time, a businessman named Ira Lubert won the right to locate a casino by submitting the highest winning bid of $10 million during a Category 4 auction that was held by the regulator. After that, in January 2021, Lubert submitted a proposal to place the casino in the 94,000-square-foot space that had recently been occupied by Macy’s Department Store at the Nittany Mall, which is located close to Penn State University. The billionaire is funding the project out of his own pocket.

300-750 Slot Machines Available at the Mini Casino

 A public hearing for input from the general public was held in College Township in August 2021, and the board received written comments in June 2022 as part of the process that led to the subsequent in-depth background research that was done by the board. The board of directors met for one more license hearing the week before it cast its vote, and at that meeting, representatives of the company were questioned about the proposal.

A Category 4 Slot Machine License enables the entity to operate between 300 and 750 slot machines as part of a “mini-casino.” Additionally, the license enables the entity to petition for permission to operate up to 30 table games for an additional fee of $2.5 million, with the capability of adding an additional 10 table games after the first year of operation of the new casino in PA.
