The legalization of sports betting in Maine has made substantial progress.
The Maine Gambling Control Unit (MGCU) announced that provisional applications for sports betting are now available on its website.

The MGCU will evaluate all submitted applications. Yet, they cannot be approved unless regulators and legislators establish regulation standards.
Based on this change at the government level, sports betting may become legal in Maine later this year or at the beginning of 2024.
There are five types of sports betting licenses listed on the MGCU’s sports betting page:
- License for establishments that wish to conduct sports wagering.
- Operators who want to offer mobile sports betting must have a license to do so.
- Supplier license: For businesses that wish to sell sports betting-related goods and services.
- Management services license: Permits a corporation to handle a sports betting licensee’s operations.
- Someone who works for a mobile or physical sportsbook and is responsible for maintaining and/or enhancing the sportsbook.
Interested businesses may submit a single application for any of the first four licenses. Each employee has an application. Each license is accompanied by an application fee and, in some situations, a renewal charge:
- License for the operation of a sports betting venue: $4,000.
- $5,000 Background investigation of facility operators
- License for mobile sports betting: $200,000
- Managed services license: $40,000
- Supplier license: $40,000
- Employee application: $302, then $25 per year or $50 every three years to renew.
- Deposit for background checks on mobile operators, management services, and suppliers: $10,000
- Applicants for any of the five licenses are required to submit a personal history form along with their application.
In the spring of 2022, the governor of Maine, Janet Mills, approved legalized sports betting. In the coming months, MGCU president Milton Champion said that the launch of sports betting could take up to two years. This was a big surprise since most states that let people bet on sports start doing it within a year.

But Champion stated that he desired time to consult with all relevant parties. In addition to allowing the public the opportunity to weigh in. Champion, a veteran of the gambling industry, desired to introduce sports betting correctly.
He implied that he anticipated that restrictions might be implemented as early as 2023. This forecast appears accurate, as applications are now available and rules are waiting.
No Online Sports Betting in Maine Tribes
The rules of the state permit four federally recognized tribes to run online sports betting on their own or employ a US sports betting operator such as FanDuel or DraftKings to do so on their behalf.
This component of the state’s legislation governing sports betting is significant for the tribes. Nationwide, more than 90% of all money legally wagered on sports is wagered online.
The state’s regulations permit ten retail sports betting licenses for casinos, racetracks, and off-track betting facilities.
