California: Sky River Casino Looks to Expand Amenities

Sky River Casino

The Wilton Rancheria tribe is already considering the possibility of expanding its Sky River Casino in Elk Grove, California, just six months after it first opened its doors. Possible additions to the complex include a hotel, a convention center, and additional dining options.

The tribe’s initial plans included the construction of a hotel with 302 guest rooms in addition to a convention center adjacent to the casino.

But, as a result of rising costs that drove up the price of construction, the tribe had a more difficult time financing the project. As a direct result of this, they reduced the scope of the original project and only constructed the casino.

Now that the facility is out in the public and making money, it will be much simpler to finance more projects at the location.

In a recent announcement, the Tribal Head of the Wilton Rancheria, Jesus Tarango, mentioned the ongoing desire of the Miwok and Nisenan tribes to construct additional amenities close to their $500 million casino, which is located close to Highway 99 and Kammerer Road.

When it comes to the expansion of Sky River, the tribe has a number of choices, according to David Strow, vice president of corporate communications for Boyd, a company based in Las Vegas. Strow made this statement in an interview with the Citizen on February 28.

According to Strow, the early success of the Wilton Rancheria’s 100,000-square-foot casino—which includes 2,000 slot machines, 80 table games, and 12 restaurants and bars—put the establishment in a position where it might perhaps expand.

Sky River Casino

Sky River is a casino that is owned by the Wilton Rancheria, and Boyd Gaming is paid a fee equal to a specific proportion of the casino’s earnings in exchange for managing the establishment.

Strow went on to say that the casino’s early success can be attributed to its “ideal” location off Highway 99, south of Sacramento, as well as the quality of the casino, which he referred to as offering a “first-in-class entertainment experience.” Straw also stated that the early success of the casino can be credited to the fact that the casino was built.

The CEO told the source that Wilton Rancheria is “in a good position to look at their options for growth” because their casino brings in enough consistent money and there is more land close to the casino that can be used for growth.

The Wilton Rancheria tribe and Boyd Gaming successfully completed the building of the Sky River Casino in August, and the casino surprised the surrounding community by opening its doors at midnight two weeks earlier than was originally scheduled. The tribe, which reclaimed its federal status in 2009, worked on the casino for more than a decade before finally opening it in 2013.

The casino partners now own all 100 acres of land that Howard Hughes Corp. once planned as a shopping center and that had been the site of a partially built mall that was a victim of the collapse of the real estate market in 2008. Boyd Gaming and the tribe both previously owned the land.

Sky River’s chief operating officer and president, Chris Gibase, was quoted in the Sacramento Business Journal as saying, “It’s a fairly vast footprint, and his opinion is that in the future years, the entire area will be developed.”
