Face Masks Dominate Casinos in Las Vegas Due to Coronavirus Threats

Threats related to the Coronavirus (COVID-19 virus) has started affecting Nevada, California. After major companies like Google and the White House canceling several events and conferences in the Sin City, more people are now being seen in Nevada casinos with face masks.

People move to save themselves

Coronavirus cases have been detected in the US. Even though the number of cases is very low, the news of deaths related to the virus has made people more cautious. They are now actively using face masks and other preventive measures to ensure that they remain safe from the potentially life-threatening disease.

Face Masks Dominate Casinos in Las Vegas Due to Coronavirus Threats

The Press Democrat recently reported that at least three people at the Graton Resort & Casino in Rohnert Park, California were seen using face masks. A Las Vegas Strip showgirl Lexi McKimmey said that she is noticing more people wearing face masks now. Other publications, like the Las Vegas Review-Journal, also noted that customers started buying mass-market face masks in the city in January itself when the news of the coronavirus outbreak in China was first being reported.

Do masks really help?

Health officials are not convinced that mass-market face masks are effective in curbing the spread of the disease. Masks, especially the loose-fitting variety or surgical masks, can prevent large dust particles but they cannot be used effectively in diseases spreading through droplets.

Even the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advised users that masks can be useful in blocking large-particle droplets and splashes. However, their design doesn’t permit them to block minute particles that could be transmitted by sneezes, coughs and some medical procedures. It added,

“Face masks also do not provide complete protection from germs and other contaminants because of the loose fit between the surface of the face mask and your face. Face masks are not intended to be used more than once.”

US health officials don’t recommend healthy people to wear face masks in public. They suggest people who are either providing care to an infected person or are themselves infected to use these masks. Instead, people should be focusing on washing their hands more frequently. There are no known cases of coronavirus cases in Las Vegas yet even though hundreds of people have been tested for the virus in the southern state. Pendleton, Oregon based Wildhorse Casino closed down after an employee at the casino was tested for the virus.
