Arizona Wants to Add New Verticals to Its Gambling Industry

Governor Doug Ducey of Arizona recently negotiated a new compact with the Native American tribes of the state to improve revenue for both and add new verticals to the state’s gaming industry.

Modernizing the gambling system

Gov. Ducey is interested in modernizing the gambling industry in the state and update the laws related to the same. On Wednesday, he submitted a new document to lawmakers in the state and announced that he has negotiated a new compact with the Native American tribes of the state. The tribes hold exclusive rights for operating casino wagering. He said that the new compact will be mutually beneficial for both parties. The tribes could expect a boost in their gambling revenue while the state can expect a higher tax figure.

According to Ducey’s press aide C.J. Karamargin, the governor aims to modernize the gambling environment of the state. He said that the currency setup was implemented at different times and demand an update to meet the current requirements. He also pointed out the rise in the use of mobile devices. Karamargin said that the amendment reflects the way people live their lives today.

Working on gambling compacts

The state’s gambling compacts were approved by voters in 2002 and will expire next year. The governor is trying to capitalize on them by revising the compacts and creating additional opportunities for earning revenues for the state. The renewal will also be useful for the tribes, as continued revenues will help them.

With advancing technology, the gambling market has changed significantly. Even the regulatory setup in the industry is changing. A landmark decision to scrap PASPA was made by the US Supreme Court in 2018 which has helped more states in the US to offer sports betting and expand their existing gambling markets. The pandemic has also brought serious changes in the economies of different states, which are reeling under pressure because of increasing health concerns and decreasing revenues.
