New York Sports Betting: PointsBet goes live in new regulated market

PointsBet has hailed today as a “major milestone” and “momentous day” for the firm, following the official launch of its mobile application and digital sports betting products in New York (Tuesday 25 January).

New York welcomes PointsBet

It marks its ninth operational state, following successful launches in New Jersey, Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Colorado, Michigan, West Virginia, and Virginia.

GeoComply reported last week on an “amazing start” for New York’s much-anticipated sports wagering debut, with 1.2 million accounts created across the five licensed sportsbooks at the time. Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel, and Rush Street Interactive were first cleared by the region’s Gaming Commission to debut on Saturday, 8 January, with BetMGM joining the game on January 17.

The remaining licensees, including Bally’s, Wynn, and Resorts World, will continue to meet all applicable statutory and regulatory requirements for launch, which will be approved on a rolling basis as they are completed.

“Launching in New York is a huge milestone for PointsBet since it is one of the state’s nine authorized online sports betting companies,” said Johnny Aitken, CEO of PointsBet USA.

“New York’s fervent sports fans and bettors now have access to the industry’s fastest online sports betting offering, with an unmatched live, in-game betting experience controlled by PointsBet’s unique technology and a world-class team.”

New York legalized sports betting in 2013 at its commercial casinos and began offering retail sports betting in July 2019, with mobile sports betting receiving legislative approval in April 2021 and going live earlier this month.

“Today is a watershed moment for PointsBet as we formally debut in New York, which is positioned to become one of the largest markets in the United States,” noted Sam Swanell, CEO and managing director of PointsBet Group. The PointsBet team is eager to demonstrate our reputation for consistently providing a world-class experience to New York sports bettors.”
