Bet365 alleviated Stoke City Debt from massive debt

Stoke City FC, a member of the English Football League (EFL), said this week that the club’s debt has been reduced by £160 million ($211.2 million), thanks to sportsbook giant Bet365.

The Club will have more long-term stability

It was lauded as “their continuous long-term commitment to the club and its funding” by the Coates family, who converted £40 million ($52.8 million) in shareholder loans into stock in Stoke City Holdings Limited and waived £120 million ($158.4 million) in shareholder debts. Transferring £40 million in loans into equity and forgiving £120 million in loans significantly strengthens the club’s balance sheet while also providing more long-term stability for the organization.

Denise Coates, the founder, and co-chief executive officer of bet365, reportedly took home nearly £300 million ($400 million) in compensation and dividends, according to John Coates, Joint Chairman of Stoke City Holdings Limited. Earlier this month, the full year 2021 financial results of bet365 revealed that Denise Coates reportedly took home nearly £300 million ($400 million), despite a roughly £170 million ($227 million) cut in pay and dividends. In addition, he is the highest-paid director at bet365.

Coates was not the only executive to take major salary cuts, as the reduction of pay packages for directors was the primary reason for the 47 percent gain in operating profit during a difficult year. As a result of their efforts in the field, the previous four or five years have not been as fruitful as they would have liked. However, the club’s dedication to its future success, financial sustainability, and position at the heart of the local community remains as strong and concentrated as it has been throughout its existence.

Redevelopment Plan for a Five-Year Term

In a statement released in conjunction with the announcement of the debt reduction, Stoke City stated that the “debt reduction follows the club’s recent announcement that a £20 million five-year reconstruction scheme at the bet365 Stadium and Clayton Wood training complex will begin this summer.” According to the program’s guidelines, the club will spend more than £4 million ($5.28 million) on stadium improvements in preparation for the 2022/23 season.

The construction includes the addition of 8,400 seats, “the upgrade of Delilah’s Bar, the installation of new toilet facilities in the Tile Mountain and South Stands, the refurbishment of the Players’ and Stanley Matthews Lounges, and the installation of a new synthetic, all-weather pitch at Clayton Wood, which will be available to the first team, the Academy teams, and the women’s team. Stoke City relocated from the Victoria Ground to the Britannia Stadium in 1997, and the stadium was renamed Bet365 Stadium in June 2016, marking the club’s 19th anniversary. A few months later, in February 2017, the Potters began construction on an expansion that will increase the stadium’s capacity to more than 30,000 people.
