Antes Up

Players are obliged to place an ante bet at the start of each hand in order to participate. In the following round, the player is dealt two cards face up, while the dealer is dealt two cards face down. At this point, three community cards (commonly called “the flop”) are dealt with by the players. At this stage, the player must make a decision on whether to fold or continue playing the hand. In order to have a qualifying hand, the dealer must have at least a pair of fours in his or her hand. If the dealer does not qualify, the Ante bet pays out at even money, and the call bet pushes, and the ante bet pays out at even money if the dealer does qualify. If the dealer qualifies, the two hands are then compared to one another to determine which is the better hand. Whenever the dealer wins, the player loses both the ante and any call bets that were placed. If the two hands are tied, the bets are both pushed.

However, game analysis suggests that players should rise roughly 82 percent of the time, folding only their poorest cards. This means players should raise whenever they hit the board, even with a bottom pair or a little pair. It may also correct if you have a flush or straight draw, or possess cards higher than the board (known as “overcards”). The house edge in this game is 3.09 percent with flawless strategy, and raising most of your hands should keep you close to that figure.
