Arkansas Casino: Fair Play files petition signatures in casino dispute

Fair Play for Arkansas has presented over 100,000 signatures to the region’s Secretary of State in the most recent round of an ongoing effort to remove a planned real-money casino facility in Pope County from a ballot proposal.

The proposal supported by the Choctaw Nation must now wait while a team performs a review of the petitions to see whether or not there are 89,151 valid signatures to qualify the initiative for the November ballot.

Suppose the number of legitimate signatures reaches at least 75% of the amount necessary. In that case, Fair Play will be granted an extra 30 days to submit more signatures, with the campaign guaranteeing that signature collectors would continue to gather signatures in the following weeks.

This comes after Amendment 100 of 2018 authorized the issuance of four casino licenses. These were new casino ventures in the counties of Pope and Jefferson, as well as Oaklawn Racing and Gaming in Hot Springs and Southland Gaming and Racing in West Memphis. Currently, the race tracks provide electronic games of skill, with the intention of expanding their offerings to include complete gaming arenas.

In addition, a mountain of evidence exists to challenge significant irregularities in Fair Play’s signature gathering efforts, such as canvassers’ gross misrepresentation of the ballot petition’s purpose, the employment of individuals with criminal backgrounds, and the improper notarization of petitions.

Press Release Statement

Hans Stiritz, Spokesperson for Fair Play for Arkansas, expressed gratitude for the support of Arkansas residents who signed their ballot petitions, enabling them to submit the needed number of signatures and go on with a statewide campaign.

The inhabitants of Pope County want to be treated similarly to their neighbors in the other 74 counties, and they oppose the imposition of a casino on their town. Now, Arkansas voters will have the opportunity to support local control and put a stop to this fraudulent process in Pope County for good.

In response to this recent action, David Couch, the attorney for Cherokee Nation Businesses, which has obtained a license for a $225 million Legends Resort & Casino in Pope County, has questioned the authenticity of the amount of signatures collected.

Considering the historical validity rate of petitions in Arkansas and the number of registered voters, indications are strong that based on what Fair Play says it will submit today (they have not yet arrived for turn in so we do not know the exact number), they will not meet the minimum numbers required to initiate the petitions, according to a statement released to the Arkansas Times.

They will stay positive and continue the battle to preserve the 2018 voter-approved constitutional amendment, preserving billions of dollars in tax revenue and thousands of well-paying jobs in Arkansas.
