After opposing Proposition 27 on the November ballot, the California Democratic Party has joined the opposition against legalizing sports betting across the whole state of California.

Opposing the Sports Betting Measures 

This plan, which was introduced last month, would allow for the growth of online and mobile gambling, which, according to the opposition, would lead to a significant rise in problem and underage gambling. 

The Democrats are the majority party in California, with Gavin Newsom as governor, Shirley Weber as secretary of state, and Rob Bonta as attorney general. 

Additionally, the party controls both houses of the California legislature. Bally’s Interactive, BetMGM, DraftKings, Fanatics, FanDuel, Penn National Gaming, and WynnBET contributed $100 million to Prop 27. 

In addition, 85 percent of state tax income would be allocated to homelessness and mental health services. The tax rate would be 10%, and licensing costs would cost $100 million per operator. 

This most recent decision by the California Democratic Party occurred one day after the Resolutions Committee voted overwhelmingly to endorse an opposing stance. The party had a neutral stance on Proposition 26. 

This Tribal Sports Wagering Act would authorize sports betting at 66 tribal casino facilities and four horse racing tracks. Because all wagers must be put in person, this is deemed the “most prudent route to legalizing sports betting in California” by an opposition backed by California Indian Tribes. The Pechanga Band of Indians, the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation, and the Barona Band of Mission Indians also contribute significantly.
