Casinos and Sports Betting Profits Fall In New Jersey

Golden Nugget and Resort Casino in Labor Talks

The most prominent casino employees union in Atlantic City, Unite Here Local 54, has announced that 97 percent of its members who work at the Resorts Casino Hotel and the Golden Nugget support the proposal for industrial action if new labor contracts are not reached by the casino operators and the union by the end of July.

In reference to the discussions, a Golden Nugget bartender commented that the corporation just wants the same benefits as other casinos in the city. So far, seven Atlantic City casinos have signed new labor agreements with their employees.

Initially, agreements were made with MGM Resorts’ Borgata, Caesars Entertainment’s Caesars, Harrah’s, and Tropicana; afterwards, the Hard Rock Casino also joined. Ocean and Balley’s were the final two to sign, with contracts taking effect retrospectively from June 1. Approximately one thousand Resorts Casino Hotel and Golden Nugget workers currently need a new labor contract. They have made the same requests as the other casino employees: more compensation, improved standards for their task, and enhanced job security.

Discussions Between Casino Owners and the Unions Commenced in May

In May, the contracts of casino workers in Atlantic City ended, and unions began negotiations with companies. However, with no settlement in sight, the unions vowed to strike at the most profitable time of year for casinos, the Fourth of July holiday. At the last minute, on the eve of the holiday, the first four casinos — Borgata, Caesars, Harrah’s, and Tropicana – inked a new labor deal with the unions that included very advantageous conditions for workers.
