HERO Will Retrain Elderly Horses.

Grace Muir started HEROS, and she now serves as the chief executive officer. The stable offers race-trained horses with specialized care and assists them in adjusting to life after retirement. Retraining of Racehorses (RoR), a nonprofit that collaborates with HEROS, will be in charge of these concerns. RoR will use its network to ensure that each horse is placed with a suitable new owner. BHA will offer a retirement evaluation and monitoring tool at a later date to make it simpler to locate new homes for retired racehorses. 

The partnership between the British Horseracing Authority and HEROS is a component of UK Racing’s broader horse welfare programs.

Philip Freedman, chairman of RoR, said that the new partnership is a direct outcome of the equestrian community’s growing desire for thoroughbred horses. He described this as a “really favorable trend” and noted that RoR continues to play a significant role in this pattern. According to Freedman, the nonprofit organization continues to explore options for retired racehorses and to offer educational opportunities for their riders. 

The Horse Welfare Board’s head, Barry Johnson, discussed the so-called “The Life Well Lived” plan. It was developed to guarantee that thoroughbred horses get the greatest care throughout their whole lives, he said.

This new understanding of racing’s responsibilities allows the corporation to widen the sport’s safety net to guarantee a seamless exit from racing for any horse bred for the sport. This entails providing a sanctuary for thoroughbreds that may need further care via an industry-backed organization with first-rate facilities and expertise. 

The Horse Welfare Board’s head, Barry Johnson, indicated that new retraining certification requirements are anticipated to be implemented by the end of 2022. Regarding racing, the Racing League has recently confirmed that it would maintain its partnership with William Hill until the 2022 season.
