Massachusetts Regulator Asked to Hurry Sports Betting Decision

The assessment wasn’t due for another month or two, but because the session ends on July 31, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission agreed to assist out.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission met on July 26 to discuss the impending Sports Betting Report.

Massachusetts Sports Betting Efforts Delayed Yet Again

Details for Sports Betting Legalization

The Commission has shared a draft version with the conference committee. Senate and House Bills disagree on college sports betting, tax rates, and betting commercials during live sports broadcasts.

The House Bill is more lenient, but the Senate Bill raises revenue and addresses problem gaming from the outset. Senate President Karen Spilka has allegedly been vociferous against House Speaker Ron Mariano’s “all or nothing” attitude, after Mariano declared that if “college sports betting isn’t in” the sports betting bill, “there’s no use in doing it.” Mariano has called the Senate bill “paternalistic”

In the end, it’s up to politicians to find a compromise on these essential topics. The good news is that almost all states that have authorized sports betting have faced a similar dilemma and addressed it. Both measures aim to create a legal framework for sports betting in Massachusetts, with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) supervising the new business.

Massachusetts Gambling Research Hub

When Massachusetts authorized casino gambling, people talked about how to tax and regulate the sector. Unsung heroes in the process re the MGC research department, UMass Amherst, and all the scientists who spent many hours examining the effects of gambling on the public. The MAGIC research is one example. It was a long-term research focused on participants’ gambling habits and attitudes over a multi-year period that helped gaming authorities make decisions and policies on gambling in the Commonwealth.

This planned ad hoc study on sports gambling in Massachusetts is anticipated to carry a lot of weight, so it will go through a rigorous review and verification procedure. The MGC released a draft version since the session closes on July 31. It’s unclear how useful the research can be in overcoming roadblocks like college sports betting arguments, and sources indicate the formal publication might come in another month or two, far beyond the session’s finish date.

Other states have handled this issue by permitting sports betting on games without state universities or during regionally noteworthy events, so drawing examples from existing solutions may be advantageous in the near run as well.
