  • The Indiana Gaming Commission revealed the state’s performance statistics on Monday, and they provide a comprehensive overview of the month’s sports betting activity. The total amount wagered in Indians’13 sportsbooks amounted to $238 million.

In August, sports betting in Indiana increased

Indiana recorded a total of $238 million in total handling for the month of August, a 14.1% increase from the previous month’s total of $206.6 million in total wagers. The amount collected during the month of August in 2022 increased by 9.9% annually compared to the $215.6 million collected in August 2021.

This was the first month in which Indiana’s sports betting handle reversed a four-month declining trend in which sports gambling receipts continued to fall. Summer is often reserved for Major League Baseball, which continues to be a significant driver of betting volume and outcomes.

This year, sports betting was growing at the state’s thirteen sportsbooks. DraftKings was able to surpass FanDuel in terms of online wagers, collecting $7.17 million in wages compared to FanDuel’s $69.6 million. BetMGM placed third with a slightly lower total of $28.6 million.

Caesars also recorded $19.8 million in internet wagers. Evidently, soccer and American football drove sports betting interest over the period. In terms of statewide handle by sport, baseball remained in the lead with $77.60 million.

A relatively minor portion of the overall betting experience was retail. For example, DraftKings received only $1.5 million in retail wagers, while FanDuel received $258,930. Hard Rock Casino Northern Indians reported only $574,361 in retail revenue.

Strong Tax Revenue Growth and Outcomes

The sportsbook at Horseshoe Hammond generated $6.27 million compared to retail’s $1.25 million. In August, the state collected $2.41 million in sports wagering tax on a $25.44 million taxable amount.

Beginning with the 2022 NFL season, sports betting will continue to generate an increase in income across the nation. The NHL and NBA seasons and NCAA events are also approaching, and the upcoming months until the end of March are expected to be quite busy.
