As the Churchill Down Exits the Business, New Platform Introduced

Henry Williams, executive director of the MGCB, stated in a news release on Wednesday that the Hannahville tribe is the first operator in Michigan to switch platform providers since the introduction of internet gaming and sports betting in January 2021. In addition, he wished them ongoing success and stated that the tribe had gained a new seasoned ally.

The domain will run under the Sports Illustrated brand. Currently, the tribe and 888 Holdings have just requested that the MGCB approve internet sports betting, but they will likely seek clearance for online gaming later this year. TwinSpires will discontinue its online sports betting and online casino offerings.

The Hannahville Indian Community was one of ten licensees initially permitted by the MGCB to operate both types of online gambling in Michigan on January 22, 2021. Midway through April, the MGCB authorized the 15th online gaming and sports betting business in the state. Michigan’s casinos and federally recognized tribes are the only entities legally permitted to hold licenses.

Still Attempting to Sell Market- Access Rights to its Operators 

Chief Executive Officer William Carstanjen informed investors on a conference call in February that CDI is abandoning the online casino and sports betting industries. However, the Kentucky Derby operator stated that its online horse betting operations would continue.

CDI’s exit from the sports gaming vertical was anticipated to occur within the next six months, according to company representatives. The company will continue to operate retail sportsbooks at its casinos, while attempting to sell market-access rights to other operators, as appropriate.

The rumor that CDI desired to sell its sports and iGaming assets has been gaining traction for some time. In December, Bloomberg reported that the business was seeking transactions for its sportsbook product, “engaging with an advisor” to solicit prospective interest in the betting platform. In a transaction, TwinSpires was estimated to be worth approximately $1.5 billion at the time.
