GeoComply Data Guarantees Super Bowl LVII Betting Boom

  • Canadian developer of solutions for fraud protection and cybersecurity GeoComply revealed geolocation data from stadiums in jurisdictions with regulated sports betting that hosted NFL games during the first two weeks of the 2022 season, which indicated a high potential for in-stadium wagering at Super Bowl LVII in Arizona.
  • During the first two weeks of the NFL season, the top-ranked stadium was Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • Bettors at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh accounted for 28% of the city’s total wagering at the time.

First regulated market to host the Super Bowl

GeoComply’s geolocation data gathered around NFL stadiums in states with legal sports betting during week 1 and week 2 of the new season revealed that over 66,000 geolocation checks originated from 7,300 unique accounts at State Farm Stadium on September 11 during the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Arizona Cardinals game.

GeoComply predicts, based on geolocation data, that Super Bowl LVII in February will be a betting bonanza, as it will be held for the first time in a state with regulated sports betting.

In addition to Arizona, the first two weeks of the NFL season saw home games in Colorado, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee. During weeks one and two, the Philadelphia Eagles’ Lincoln Financial Field was the most visited stadium, with 76,400 geolocation checks from 8,000 unique users.

Pennsylvania Gamblers Lead the Pack

Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan, ranked third during the Philadelphia Eagles’ game against the Detroit Lions, as GeoComply recorded 47,000 geolocation checks from the stadium by 6,100 distinct users. A comparison of data pertaining to two Sunday matches played at MetLife Stadium revealed that bettors at the Ravens vs. Jets game with 44,300 checks from 8,800 accounts were more active than those at the Panthers vs. Giants game a week later with 38,800 checks from 8,000 unique users.

Although bettors at the Patriots vs. Steelers game trailed those at the Vikings vs. Eagles game, the 38,600 checks from 5,000 accounts represented 28% of total betting activity in the city of Pittsburgh, according to data from Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh.

All geolocation data included in the analysis were collected from within stadiums and neighboring parking lots, including tailgating, for a total of seven hours, beginning three hours prior to kickoff and ending four hours after the game. As the trusted geolocation provider for nearly all of the nation’s operators, GeoComply provides accurate data and insight into the sports betting sector.

GeoComply reported earlier this month that betting data from the opening Thursday of the NFL season increased by 77% compared to the same period in 2021, while geolocation checks for the first NFL week increased by 71.5% year-over-year
