The former Isle of Capri Hotel and Casino in Louisiana is now Horseshoe Lake Charles, a brand-new land-based development.
The property’s new sportsbook had a special visitor on its first day, and it was none other than record-setting bettor Jim ’Mattress Mack’ McIngvale.
The high-roller from Houston placed the land-based property’s first bet at 11:30 a.m., wagering $1 million on the Houston Cougars winning the NCAA basketball championship.

Bringing More Entertainment to the Customers
According to 12NewsNow, the grand opening was attended by tens of thousands of eager gamblers from Texas, Louisiana, and beyond. Everything at the resort, including the hotel, restaurants, and casino floor, is now officially operational. Caesars said it plans to bring even more entertainment ”soon.”
First 2,000 Guest to Receive a Special Gift on the Opening
According to a press release issued prior to the opening, Westlake Mayor Dan Racca has proclaimed December 12 to be ”Horseshoe Day.” The casino opened at noon, with the first 2,000 guests receiving a special gift on the opening day. In addition, there was a 9 p.m. fireworks display over the lake as part of the opening festivities.
Nearly 1,000 slot machines and table games, as well as an official WSOP Poker Room, a brand-new Caesars Sportsbook, and 253 hotel rooms are featured at the new property.
In addition to the vast array of food and beverage outlets that will be available on opening day, Horseshoe Lake Charles will bring Michelin-starred chef Gordon Ramsay to the state of Louisiana with the opening of Gordon Ramsay Steak in the middle of 2023.

The casino was closed for two years because of the pandemic and Hurricane Laura’s damage. ”When the company decided to close the Isle of Capri in 2020, we did not anticipate that it would be closed for this long,” said Anthony Carano, President and Chief Operating Officer of Caesars Entertainment.

Casino officials were unaware that the Isle of Capri would not reopen for so long after it closed. Hundreds of employees were maintained on retainer during the renovations. Dan Real, regional president of Caesars Entertainment, stated, ”To live and see your place of employment literally sail away and have to go through COVID.”
Jeff Favre, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Horseshoe Lake Charles, added, ”The Lake Charles community’s support has been tremendous, and they cannot wait to welcome their guests back to experience the resort’s brand-new amenities.
Reopening as a Horseshoe casino after being closed for more than two years is the icing on the cake of a pretty spectacular celebration.”
Caesars Entertainment also operates a Horseshoe Casino in Bossier City, which is located less than 200 miles from Horseshoe Lake Charles.
The company also owns Caesars New Orleans and Harrah’s New Orleans in Louisiana. The gambling giant also owns the naming rights to the Saints’ football stadium in New Orleans.
