PlayUp Sportsbook Entry to Ohio Sports Betting Market Halted

PlayUp

The Ohio Casino Control Commission denies PlayUp’s sportsbook to secure a license because of suspicions of illicit gambling.

After the state’s regulator identified suspected illegal gambling activities relating to PlayUp’s PlaySlots+ product, it seems likely that the Australian betting operator PlayUp will be denied its Ohio license.

The Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) announced its intention to halt the licensing process until PlayUp takes the appropriate steps to resolve the issues.

Ohio Will Be Highly Profitable and Competitive Market

PlayUp’s impending launch in Ohio may fail at the eleventh hour. The operator got conditional permission for its online license, but subsequent discoveries by the OCCC may ruin the company’s ambitions.

The loss might prove catastrophic for PlayUp, as the Ohio sportsbook market goes live on January 1 and dozens of operators vie for an early lead.

After BallyBet, Betway, Out The Gate, and Underdog Sports, the number of mobile sportsbooks provisionally permitted for an early launch grew to 20. Numerous prominent betting firms have expressed interest in Ohio’s ardent sports fan base.

Several estimates suggest that in 2022, with a population of almost 12 million, it will be one of the leading states for sports betting in the United States. Even a brief delay could be terrible for the Australian company, since it would provide the rival with a significant edge in establishing an early market presence.

An upcoming hearing will decide PlayUp’s Destiny

PlayUp has requested an audience with the OCCC to present its case. The Commission will vote on their final decision following the conclusion of the discussions, but the ramifications for the operator appear to be dire.

The agency asserts that PlayUp violated a number of disqualifying rules. After April 16, 2015, the company’s Slots+ program allegedly permitted illegal wagering by U.S. customers.

The OCCC also charged the operator with deceptive advertising for this product. PlayUp has been insistent that it intends to comply with all Ohio regulations and will abide with the Commission’s cease-and-desist order. The importance of a prospective Ohio license is highlighted by the fact that the offending Slots+ app has been deactivated in all U.S. states, suggesting that the operator may have already taken remedial action.

The Commission maintains rigorous criteria

After PENN Entertainment’s Barstool Sportsbook was notified of a potential $250,000 penalties, the OCCC will also vote on another high-profile infringement. During its most recent Barstool College Football Show, the firm allegedly advertised its services to minors. The Commission observed that the event targeted the area surrounding the University of Toledo campus, representing a serious infringement of marketing restrictions.

Aim of Expanding Sports Betting Business

Such proactive efforts by Ohio’s regulator are a positive sign for the state’s expanding sports betting market, as client protection measures are essential for a healthy gaming environment.

The OCCC’s decision to grant infringing operators the chance to a hearing is also welcome, as it promotes communication and encourages businesses to settle outstanding issues. With the debut of the state’s sports betting market imminent, the Commission’s initial rulings will set the tone for Ohio’s betting sector.
