The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has been putting a lot of effort into growing its gambling industry. 

After launching the sports betting industry, the work has begun on making it available on mobile devices.

The soft launch for placing in-person sports bets was scheduled for the end of this month, ahead of the Super Bowl, and six operators are already in line, waiting to see if their applications for mobile sports betting licenses will be accepted. The Super Bowl will take place on February 3rd.

Online Sports Betting Discussions

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) will resume its meetings on January 3, and the topic of discussion at the public meeting/hearing that will begin at 10 am will be the six operators who have submitted applications for online sports betting licenses. 

At the hearing, anybody who is interested will have the opportunity to provide input or comments on the operators and the applications they have submitted. In the days that will follow, we will proceed with the evaluation process.

Providing Sports Betting and Expansion to the Market

Bally’s Interactive, LLC, Betfair Interactive US, LLC (the company name behind FanDuel), Betr Holdings, Inc., Crown MA Gaming, LLC (the company name behind DraftKings), Digital Gaming Corporation USA, and PointsBet Massachusetts, LLC are the companies who have applied for the license. 

However, as of right now, there are only three land-based casinos that have been granted licenses: MGM Springfield, Encore Boston Harbor, and Plainridge Park Casino.

The Encore Boston Harbor casino was the first establishment in the history of Massachusetts to be granted a license to provide sports betting, signaling the state’s rapid expansion of the sports betting industry in recent years. 

MGM’s initial attempt to acquire the rights to that title was unsuccessful, but the company was subsequently deemed appropriate for a license. Soon after, Plainridge did the same thing, and Caesars is currently eagerly expecting developments on the mobile front.

The Expansion of Gambling in Massachusetts

Massachusetts’s mobile sports betting market was supposed to start in March of this year, and the process of reviewing license applications was going to pick up exactly where it left off on the very first working day of the new year. 

The implementation of mobile betting on sporting events has hit a few snags along the way, which has slowed down the process somewhat. However, this has not been an entirely smooth ride.

Soft Launch of Betting In Person

If the existing situation remains the same, the license applicants will be responsible for paying a cost of $5 million if their application bids are accepted. 

The licenses will be valid for a period of five years, at the conclusion of which another application will be required, bringing with it the potential of the operator being required to pay an additional five million dollars in fees if it is decided that they are qualified for license renewal.

The expansion of gaming in Massachusetts was highly active in 2022, and judging from the meetings calendar and agendas for the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC), 2023 will bring more of the same. 

A soft launch for in-person sports wagers is slated for the end of January, and the process of legalizing sports betting is expected to be completed in the near future. However, there are still other items on the list of things to complete.

The states of Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, and Connecticut have all passed legislation to regulate online poker, and all of these states are located relatively close to Massachusetts. 

As a result, rumors have begun to circulate that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts may be considering doing the same thing. However, the pressure that comes from being in close vicinity to legalized gambling activities isn’t as severe for mobile implementations, so at this moment, all of this is just pure supposition.
