Missouri: Sports Betting Legalization a Priority Agenda in 2023

Missouri

Republicans and Democrats in Missouri think that the state’s residents want to be able to place wagers legally on sporting events.

According to the leaders of both parties in the Missouri legislature, the legalization of sports betting is anticipated to be one of the highest priority items that will be discussed at the state’s annual legislative session.

Important to the General Public

According to The Missouri Independent, state legislators gathered for their annual session with the topic at the forefront of their minds.

Currently, residents of Missouri who want to place a bet on a sporting event must travel to either the state of Kansas or the state of Illinois, which are both located nearby. However, this may change in the near future.

Legislative leaders from all parties feel that the public interest in legalizing sports betting is what should position sports betting high up on the agenda list. Both the House Minority and Majority leaders, as well as the Senate President and Senate Minority Leader, share the same perspective.

Press Release Statements

Crystal Quade, a Democrat, and the House Minority Leader stated that betting on sports is “a subject of conversation everywhere,” while Senate President Pro Tem Caleb Rowden, a Republican, added that he has been hearing about betting on sports “all the time.”

Jonathan Patterson, a Republican and the House Majority Leader, explained that people’s interest is being amplified by the advertising that is being shown on TV and on billboards across the Kansas City area.

John Rizzo, the Senate Minority Leader, admitted that he had crossed the Kansas border to place a wager in the past, similar to most sports fans in the Kansas City area.

Patterson also argued that it is “a little silly for people in Kansas City to have to go over to the other side and place their bets there” because sports betting “is something that a lot of people want to have.” Patterson is convinced that the high public interest will push the topic higher up on the agenda.

The part that deals with the sales

And the geolocation data from GeoComply, which shows that the geolocation services provider has prevented 5.7 million login attempts from Missouri residents trying to access gambling websites between September 1 and December 16, provides credence to his viewpoint, which is confirmed by the statistics.

In addition, between November 16 and December 16, approximately 1,270 users had their devices located on both sides of the Kansas border.

This means that Missouri is losing out on potential revenue from sports betting while Kansas is receiving state money, revenue that “can be used for education,” according to Patterson. In addition, Kansas is receiving state money from Missouri.

Looking Forward to Acquiring More in Gambling Market

But the legalization of sports betting will not be an easy task because it will pit competing interests against one another.

Casino operators and professional teams will look to acquire a large enough slice of the revenue pie; video vendors will look to lawmakers for concessions such as the legalization of a new lottery game for their customers across bars, truck stops, and fraternal halls; and operators of games at gas stations and corner stores who are currently facing prosecution will oppose any bill that will allow them to continue to face prosecution.
