A basketball coach at the University of Dayton filed a complaint, so now is the time to think about banning anyone who threatens or insults Ohio players from betting on sports events.

After his team was criticized for how they played in a close loss and how they blew a 14-point lead at halftime, Coach Anthony Grant got angry and sent a complaint to the other team.

The Kind of Criticism That Gets Everyone’s Attention

Matt Schuler, the executive director of the Ohio Casino Control Agency, indicated that the commission is permitted to issue a lifelong ban on anyone who could harm or disparage athletes in the state of Ohio. Schuler noted that even though it was not an “overly prevalent” event, it has the potential to attract everyone’s attention whenever it does occur.

He said this while clarifying that it was not an “overly prevalent” occurrence. Schuler was quoted as providing another explanation to Gongwer News, saying that this occurs due to the fact that those who are put in charge of playing the games are “kids.”

Press Release Statements

At the conclusion of the game, Coach Grant held a news conference in which he verbally and emotionally criticized the potential outcomes of the state’s decision to legalize the sports betting market and to initiate its operation on January 1, 2023. The coach discussed the newly enacted legislation that, according to Grant, “may change the landscape of what it means to participate in collegiate sports.”

He drew attention to people who “make it about themselves and attack kids for their own reasons,” making people more aware of the need to protect the mental health of athletes and their families.

Jessica Franks, a spokesperson for the Casino Control Commission, argued that the criticism of student-athletes was not something new and that it occurred prior to the legalization of sports betting in the state. This is because, according to Franks, the criticism of student-athletes occurred before the legalization of sports betting in the state. However, because of the meteoric rise in popularity of social media, this criticism has become a great deal more obvious.

CJ Stroud, a quarterback for the State University, reported receiving death threats just a few weeks before sports gambling was given the green light under the bill signed by Governor Mike DeWine in December 2021. The fans of CJ Stroud’s team were not happy with their team’s loss to their Michigan rivals, and they vented their frustrations by making threats.

The University of Dayton states that it “Appreciates the Attention” of the Commission.

The institution expressed its gratitude to the commission for giving the issue of online hate speech in sports the attention it deserved. They stated that anything that can protect the student-athlete’s best interests should be further looked into, and they used the voice of the university’s vice president, Neil Sullivan, to make their point.

Rep. Brian Stewart, a Republican representing Pickaway County in the Ohio General Assembly, brought up the possibility of designating as a violation of gamblers’ free speech the possibility of banning gamblers who criticize players. Before speaking publicly about the government prohibiting private persons “for saying unpleasant things to other private citizens,” Stewart encouraged the commission to “get an emergency refresher on the First Amendment.” Stewart also recommended that the committee take Stewart’s advice.

Soon after its launch, Ohio’s online sports betting market recorded a massive start, with 11.3 million geolocation transactions recorded over the first two days alone, surpassing New York’s figures. These numbers were taken not long after Ohio’s online sports betting market started taking bets.
