Connecticut Congress Looks to Place Stricter Regulations on Gambling Ads

A proposal in Connecticut calls for stricter regulation of gambling advertisements. This new plan is aimed at protecting gamblers in the state of Connecticut by calling for stringent regulations around advertising.

The state is one of the few that currently offers online sports betting, gambling in person, and online gambling at retail locations.

In October 2021, Connecticut became the first state in the US to open a regulated market for online gambling and sports betting. People younger than 21, which is the legal drinking age in most states in the US, are not allowed to take part in the activity. This restriction comes as no surprise.

This week, a proposal from the beginning of the month calls for strict rules to be put in place for advertising. In the beginning of this month, Senate Bill 971, also known as SB 971, was sent to the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Security within the state Senate. After that, it was presented for a public hearing in the middle of February.

Rep. Tony Scott and Sen. Herron Gaston both back the bill, which would make it illegal to advertise sports betting in stores, sports betting on the internet, and online casino gambling.

The law says that there should be limits on advertising that uses “financial enticement to participate in such gaming or wagering.” This indicates, to put it another way, that operators might be prohibited from providing monetary incentives such as free bets and bonuses of any kind, including those financial ones.

Strict Regulations on Using Credit Cards for Sports Betting and Gambling

Also, the law suggests making it illegal to use credit cards and debit cards to gamble. In situations involving more than one individual, the usage of debit and credit cards would be subject to the restrictions outlined in the proposal.

This indicates that the regulation proposes that only the person who holds the card account will be able to use it. Additionally, this effectively restricts the use of dual accounts for gambling purposes.

David Prestwood, who is in charge of government affairs at DraftKings, has reportedly expressed his opposition to the idea, according to a report that Yahoo published the previous week.

He explained that there is no other jurisdiction in the United States that has such a restriction, and he was referring to the section of the bill that deals with the use of credit or debit cards by a single owner. In addition to this, Prestwood emphasized how tough it is to fulfill such a need in a way that is compliant.

In the end, the bill is supposed to help protect customers in the state of Connecticut. The provision of the law that pertains to the use of credit cards is intended to guarantee that gamblers are accountable for their financial misfortunes and do not involve other members of their families in their gambling activities. Yet, it is still unclear whether or not Senate Bill 971 will be successful in gaining additional traction.
