Even though there are a lot of casinos and other ways to gamble, Nevada is still one of only five U.S. states that do not have an official lottery.

The Culinary Union supported Miller’s proposed amendment to the constitution that would abolish the present ban on lotteries.

The Nevada Resorts Association (NRA), which represents the state’s gaming and resort industries, took a different stance. Hence, the Culinary Union expressed openly its unhappiness with the NRA’s position on the legalization of lotteries.

According to a story in The Nevada Independent, the president of the National Rifle Association, Virginia Valentine, said that a plan to start a state lottery should think about how it will affect all Nevada businesses’ finances and economies.

According to a statement released earlier this week by Ted Pappageorge, secretary-treasurer of the Culinary Union, the union did not take kindly to the fact that the state’s “largest industry is comfortable with Nevada being last in the nation in mental health and close to last in education.”

This is because, over the years, the union has been involved in a number of significant struggles for working families in Carson City, including their campaigns against Big Pharma on the need for greater transparency related to diabetic and asthma medications.

Also, the union has won a lengthy, two-and-a-half-decade battle against surprise medical bills mailed to Nevada citizens.

As expected, the largest Latinx, Black, AAPI, and immigrant group in Nevada, which has members from 178 countries, has been working hard to get a state lottery that would give some of its money to mental health and education for young people.

“Do Better,” the Culinary Union urges the NRA

As Pappageorge said again in the same statement, the group will continue to fight hard for its members and all Nevadans to have good health care and stable neighborhoods. Pappageorge urged the NRA to “do better” for state communities in this area.

To bolster its arguments, the Culinary Union cited a World Health Organization study indicating a 25 percent increase in depression and anxiety cases during the first year of the pandemic.

The Culinary Union is requesting a “reliable, long-term funding source” to support the mental health needs of children and adolescents in Nevada,” although it has not yet provided an estimate of the money Nevada is losing by failing to authorize lotteries.

The same statement from the group described the state as a “regulatory gold standard of gaming” that knows how to handle gambling without negatively impacting its residents. Hence, the union deemed a sustainable investment in the mental health of young people to be a “far overdue good public policy.”

The group also said it was starting a campaign to convince voters to give more money to programs that fund mental health and education for young people.

They said they were looking forward to “working with Assemblyman Miller on this important effort” and urged the legislature to pass the constitutional amendment and invest in the people of the state.
