Maryland’s MGM National Harbor embraces sports betting

MGM Resorts International has launched legalized sports betting in Maryland, expanding its wagering reach in the United States even further with the launch of its MGM National Harbor complex.

MGM Maryland now offers sportsbook

MGM Resorts International was granted a license in December 2013 to develop a US$925 million resort at National Harbor (which was later increased to US$1.2 billion).

The business won the right by outbidding Penn National Gaming’s bid for a US$700 million facility at its Rosecroft Raceway and Greenwood Racing’s bid for a US$761 million facility on Maryland Route 210. MGM National Harbor began construction in April 2014 and was opened on December 8, 2016. Governor Larry Hogan placed the state’s first ceremonial wager at the BetMGM-branded sportsbook and lounge, one of several wagering outlets that debuted at the site.

MGM National Harbor features a 23-story hotel with 308 rooms, 135,000 square feet (12,500 square meters) of gaming space, retail space, a spa, seven restaurants, a 3,000-seat theater with seven VIP suites, 27,000 square feet (2,500 square meters) of meeting and event space, and a 4,800-car parking garage.

Governor Larry Hogan placed the state’s first ceremonial wager at the BetMGM-branded sportsbook and lounge, one of several wagering outlets that debuted at the site.

“Today marks the end of a year-long campaign to bring sports betting to the State of Maryland,” Hogan stated.

“In addition to allowing Maryland residents to wager on football, basketball, and other sports, sports betting will help retain more money in the state and provide another crucial source of funding for public education without increasing taxes on families and small businesses.”

“The BetMGM Sportsbook & Lounge at MGM National Harbor is a critical component in making the Capital Region one of the country’s premier sports betting centers,” said Adam Greenblatt, CEO of BetMGM. We’ve created a world-class location for sports lovers in collaboration with the MGM National Harbor team. Sports wagering is also available in the Tap sports bar, which features four betting windows and kiosks, and on the casino’s second level, which features seven booths and five windows.”

Chris Gumiela, vice president of BetMGM marketing for MGM Resorts, added: “As we mark the fifth anniversary of MGM National Harbor, the advent of sports betting further cements our image as the DMV’s leading entertainment destination.”

“We’re thrilled to give a one-of-a-kind experience for our customers while also adding jobs and money to the state.”
