6,000 Missourians prohibited from betting on sports in Kansas

  • It appears that Missouri citizens are ready to place sports betting, as 16,000 of them were prevented from doing so on September 1 when Kansas began its sports betting market.
  • Most bordering states have already opened their sports betting markets, with Kansas being the most recent to enter the fray. It demonstrates the considerable interest of Missourians in sports betting and has caused politicians to speak on the impending legalization.
  • Even though neighboring states have already implemented sports betting, it is questionable whether Missouri will follow suit.

Missourians Desire the Ability to Bet on Sports in Their State

On September 1, location detection software and cybersecurity services provider GeoComply Solutions banned 16,000 Missourian attempts to place wagers using mobile applications for Kansas sports betting.

About sixty percent were located in the Missourian portion of Kansas City, only miles from the Kansas state line. It demonstrates the significant interest Missourians have in sports betting.

Consequently, Caleb Rowden, a member of the Missouri State Senate, has declared that the legalization of sports betting in Missouri will be a priority during the upcoming legislative session.

The senator added that the introduction of sports betting in the state is supported by legislators of all parties, not just his fellow Republicans.

The state of Kansas is the 32nd to authorize sports betting. The official debut of the retail sports betting industry was scheduled for September 1, while internet wagering will begin on September 8. Everyone over 21 is permitted to wager on sporting events as long as they are located within Kansas state limits.

GeoComply Solutions has observed that a bettor’s location is confirmed multiple times during a sports betting app. The closer a user is to a state boundary, the more frequently the program checks that user’s precise location.

Missouri’s Gambling Laws Cause Difficulties

The introduction of retail and online sports betting in Kansas does not indicate that Missouri will follow suit. Illinois began its sports betting market in 2020, whereas Missouri’s northern neighbor, Iowa, has offered sports betting since 2019.

Missouri lacks not merely a legal framework for sports betting. Even legislation covering previously legalized gaming choices is ambiguous and needs to be clarified.

For instance, the state has struggled with the spread of illegal slot machines in gas stations, bars, and corner stores. In contrast to neighboring states such as Illinois and Missouri, no legislation regulates and taxes these types of gambling machines outside of casinos.
