Coronado Partners’ Tucumcari Racino Project Is Delayed

Beginning in June, Albuquerque District Judge Nancy Franchini ruled that the NMRC must decide on the Coronado Partners license for a horse-racing track and casino in Tucumcari. 

Judge Franchini allowed the panel 90 days to reach a decision on the issue. According to the order of the Albuquerque District Court, the NMRC has until November 2 to complete its responsibilities and render a conclusion. This means that the NMRC’s last opportunity to comply with the order of the district court is at its regularly scheduled meeting on October 20.

The issue was on the agenda for the NMRC’s regular meeting on August 25, but no action was taken. Coronado Partners and the NMRC have addressed the problem and reached an agreement to postpone a decision on the license application, according to the explanation. The attorney for Coronado Partners, Warren Frost, has validated this information.

Coronado Partners Has Been Waiting for Years for a Horse-Racing License

The ruling announced by the Albuquerque District Court on June 3 was the result of a request submitted by the attorney for Coronado Partners, Warren Frost, who requested a writ of mandamus. This indicates that the firm asked the court to force the NMRC to fulfill its public responsibilities.

In Tucumcari, Coronado Partners intends to construct a horse racing track and casino. It has been anticipated that the project will create approximately 500 new employees and generate up to $55 million in revenue over the next three years.

The NMRC has delayed the judgment regarding the Coronado Partners project for years. Ismael “Izzy” Trejo, the NMRC’s director, contended before the judge that the NMRC cannot give its sixth horse-racing license. She cited numerous reasons, including the fact that the horse racing and horse breeding businesses in New Mexico are currently in a precarious position. However, Judge Franchini dismissed these charges.

It must be remembered that the sixth license is the last one available and that if awarded, no additional operators will be able to enter the New Mexico gaming market. In light of this, the delay in the NMRC judgment is unusual and raises questions about whether the commission is “holding” this license for someone else.
