Kansas to Become One of States to Authorize Sports Betting

Kansas became one of a handful of states to authorize sports betting last year. In the same year, the state also officially launched its mobile and retail sports betting market in September.

As is the case with any kind of gambling, there are those who become addicted to betting, despite the fact that the majority of gamblers engage in the activity in a responsible manner.

The problem presented by the shortage of funds

During an interview with KWCH, Stephenie Roberts, a clinical social worker and the Chair of the South Central Kansas Problem Gambling Task Force, a group dedicated to raising awareness, educating, and preventing problem gambling, stated that funds in the state for raising awareness have been declining.

The South Central Kansas Problem Gambling Task Force is a group focused on raising awareness, educating, and preventing problem gambling. She explained that the decrease in funding led to the loss of problem gambling specialists and even pointed out that Kansas has not conducted a study on the subject in the past five years. She said that this was due to the lack of funding.

Promoting Awareness and Prevention of Gaming Addiction

Roberts pointed out that this is a big issue, noting that there are people in Kansas who haven’t even heard of treatment and support programs for problem gambling, and that this is a problem that has to be addressed. She brought up the fact that advertisements do exist that promote certain services; however, “sometimes the print is so small that people can’t see it,” she said.

According to Roberts, one approach to support gambling treatment programs and promote awareness is by changing legislation so that more monies are dedicated toward education and prevention of gaming.

Gambling Entertaining But Must Be Under Control

According to Roberts, it will be difficult to establish the impact that sports betting has on Kansas citizens in the absence of an adequate study on the negative effects of gambling.

Nevertheless, she stated that there is cause for concern over the speed and convenience with which one can place bets using a smartphone.

Although the clinical social worker acknowledged that placing bets can be an enjoyable activity, she emphasized the importance of clients keeping track of their expenditures.

Roberts stated that gamblers need to establish limits for themselves, comparing gambling on sports to other types of recreational activity.

Encouraging Responsible Gambling and Education

Since the beginning of regulated sports betting to the end of 2022, there were roughly $720 million wagered in Kansas, according to figures given by the gambling regulator in the state, the Kansas Lottery.

The betting handle resulted in a net revenue of $20.9 million for the operators, while the state collected $2,092,630 in tax revenue from the activity based on the 10% tax rate that applies to it.

Only a small portion of that amount was allocated to support initiatives in the state of Kansas that encourage responsible gambling and education.
