Casumo and PokerStars will operate in Ontario’s newly regulated online casino and sports betting sector. The province’s gaming authority, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission (AGCO), handed PokerStars’ main firm, TSG Interactive Canada, a license valid until June 7, 2024.

Casumo’s online casino license will expire before PokerStars’

The AGCO issued a license to Casumo via the operator’s parent business, Pret Play. However, unlike PokerStars, its license will not be valid until 2024. Instead, AGCO stated that Casumo’s license would expire on June 7, 2023, a year sooner than PokerStars. PokerStars stands to gain the most from regulated online gambling, since its casino, poker, sportsbook, and mobile app domains have been approved by Ontario’s regulatory body. However, the procedure is not yet complete since PokerStars must establish a deal with iGaming Ontario. After reaching an agreement, the operator will be allowed to provide its services. Since its launch, the industry for internet gaming in Ontario has flourished. NorthStar Bets is the most recent operator to begin its services in Canada’s largest province. The platform for the casino and sportsbook is powered by Playtech. The deal between NorthStar and Playtech stipulates that Playtech would offer casino and live casino services as well as its IMS platform to the online gaming site.

Compliance with Industry Standards

The AGCO seeks to govern the Ontario online gaming sector in the most effective and efficient manner possible. Therefore, it urged all operators to suspend activities until they had a license or risk having their licensing application denied. The regulator also shown that it has no qualms about fining even the most reputable companies if they fail to fulfill industry standards. Once they open their services in Ontario, Casumo and PokerStars will need to take this into account.

BetMGM and PointsBet are good instances of what happens to unruly operators. One month following the opening of online gaming in Ontario, the AGCO punished both providers for claimed advertising and bonus deficiencies. Consequently, BetMGM was fined $48,000 while PointsBet was fined $30,000. According to AGCO, BetMGM and PointsBet violated Sections 2.04 and 2.05 of the Internet Gaming Code of Ontario. Scott Vanderwel, the chief executive officer of PointsBet Canada, made a public apology for the firm’s failure to satisfy the criteria and said that the company would avoid crossing the line in the future.
