PointsBet’s new 30-second advertisement, which is part of the company’s “Do It Live” campaign, focuses on an ordinary situation that everyone can relate to. Surely, in this current era, every smartphone owner uses his or her favorite applications on the toilet for a few (or more) moments alone.

The advertisement, which is ironically titled Sanctuary, highlights the simplicity and convenience of the use of the PointsBet mobile application and its live sports betting capabilities. Brand director for PontsBet, Josh Powell, talked about the creative process behind the advertisement:

The firm views the bathroom as the ultimate haven, where a large number of people can escape the outside world, pull out their phones, and utilize the PointsBet app. In spite of the fact that their original creative idea was a bit unconventional for broadcast, the fact remains that a large number of spectators have enjoyed the excitement of a cash-out while being king or queen of the porcelain.

The advertisement portrays a realistic ordinary moment in a single shot without the use of graphics or cutting. It is relatable to all people due to its simplicity, which correlates perfectly with the simplicity of the PointsBet app.

The Difference Between the TV Broadcast Version and the Ad’s Edgy Original Cut

The advertisement features two versions, as the initial version was deemed inappropriate for television airing. Therefore, the corporation created a new model for broadcasting.

The distinction lies in the framing. The TV edit features a closer shot of the man sitting on the toilet, providing a more discreet and intriguing glimpse into this private moment. The gentleman is clearly in the restroom, but only his upper torso is visible.

The original version of the toilet scene is a broader shot. The man’s pants are visible around his ankles. Certainly nothing wrong, but PointsBet likely viewed this as an intrusion into someone’s personal space. Personally, I wouldn’t call it “edgy,” but broadcast networks have different propriety standards.

The original version is available on PointsBet’s social platforms, including YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram, as well as the PointsBet app. The television version will air on all of NBC’s network and digital channels, including Chicago, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. local networks.
