In the last month, gambling in North Dakota was on the verge of experiencing a revolution. In the early week of December, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum brought good news with iGaming and mobile sports betting now authorized on territories owned by tribal governments.

About the Signed Agreement

North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum signed a number of 10-year gaming compacts with several Native American tribes throughout the state. 

As a result of these compacts, iGaming as well as online sports betting will become allowed in tribal areas.

In addition, the minimum age requirement for gambling in tribal casinos has been reduced to 19, down from the previous minimum age requirement of 21.

Also, beginning immediately, gamblers on tribal reservations will be permitted to use credit and debit cards when placing their bets. 

There is still a requirement for the final clearance of the Department of the Interior in the United States.

Providing Quality iGaming and Mobile Sports Betting 

The most recent compact inked in North Dakota means that, as it stands right now, tribes are the only operators to provide iGaming and mobile sports betting.

 This is because the state has not yet introduced any of these forms of gambling in any capacity. Even if it is unclear how or when this may change for North Dakota, the signed compacts are nevertheless a step toward increasing gaming there.

At the signing, there were representatives from five different tribes, and each of those tribes contributed $25,000 to help fight gambling addiction. Tribal casinos are the only legal facilities that currently provide gambling due to the current condition of gambling in North Dakota. 

This is in contrast to the North Dakota Lottery and charity gaming that registered non-profit organizations offer.

Gambling is Still Restricted in North Dakota on the Whole

The state’s five tribes had the goal of altering that status quo and assuming monopolistic control over its internet gaming sector. 

Their plan for gambling online was to expand it outside tribal lands and have it be operated on servers that were housed inside reservations, which is where gambling is currently allowed. 

This is not a novel approach to the problem, but there has only been little success with it so far.

There are others who believe that by enacting this plan, North Dakota’s existing regulations on iGaming and mobile sports betting would have been circumvented. 

A “clear legal avenue does not exist for the governor to allow such a wide extension of gaming,” Governor Doug Burgum said, indicating his opposition to the plan. 

Because of this, residents of North Dakota are prohibited from taking part in these kinds of gambling activities when they are conducted outside of tribal lands.

At this point in time, when this article was written, a total of 33 states have some kind of legalized sports betting, with just a few of those states being fully opposed to the idea of introducing it in the future. 

This year alone has seen the signing of number of legislation, consistently adding to the list. 

Some governments are allowing it solely to maintain income inside the state, while other states are doing it simply to provide better gambling damage aid to residents. It is also present in the neighboring state of South Dakota, at least to some degree.
