Massachusetts sports betting

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC), the state’s gambling regulator, announced that six operators had been granted preliminary approval for an untethered Category 3 license for online/mobile sports betting in the state.

Following a number of meetings and a thorough examination of the applications presented by the operators, the regulator has decided to make the announcement. In addition, before giving the go-ahead for preliminary suitability, the MGC made sure to attend all of the operators’ presentations and participate in any conversations that took place with them.

Securing Betting Licenses to the Market

Following the most recent meeting of the MGC, a unanimous vote granted Bally Bet, DraftKings, FanDuel, Betway, and PointsBet each a provisional untethered Category 3 sports betting operator license. Betr, a gambling enterprise owned by social media star Jake Paul, was the sixth operator to secure a temporary license in the state of Massachusetts following a 4-1 vote by the regulator in its favor.

The preliminary suitability for untethered Category 3 sports betting licenses was announced just in time for the state to get ready for its planned launch of sports betting. Although the state made the move to legalize the activity back in the summer of 2017, the MGC has only recently confirmed that it intends to launch retail sports betting on January 31.

On the other hand, the introduction of mobile and online sports betting is also anticipated to take place during the month of March this year. The governing body promised to provide additional information at a later time. In light of the most recent approval of a temporary license, the six operators join the ranks of the other five companies that have already obtained a license in the state of Massachusetts.

Sports Betting Keeps Growing Across the U.S

The repeal of PASPA in 2018 has resulted in a dramatic increase in the number of states that are able to engage in sports betting, which had previously been limited to a small number of states. In its decision to overturn PASPA, the Supreme Court of the United States opened the door for state legislatures to legalize sports betting, create regulatory structures, and begin offering the activity. Because of this, the market for wagering on sporting events skyrocketed and is still growing.

Making Preparations to Implement Legalization

According to the data provided by the American Gaming Association, there are currently 32 states and the District of Columbia that offer some kind of sports betting. In addition to this, there are currently four states, one of which is the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, that have decriminalized the practice and are making preparations to implement it.

Nine other states do not have any ongoing legislative efforts to legalize any form of wagering on sports, while five other states are currently attempting to legalize some form of sports betting.

Taxing wagers placed on sporting events results in additional revenue for local governments and state coffers. In addition to being an extremely beneficial economic stimulant, the activity also makes a contribution in the form of sponsorship to various professional sports leagues and teams.

Bettors stand to benefit from legalized sports wagering as well, and the creation of a competitive market should result from the presence of multiple operators offering the activity. At the same time, the legalization of the activity results in a reduction in the proportion of transactions that take place on the underground market or offshore, which helps protect the customers’ health and safety.
