ESPN Sports Betting Deal Not Yet Part of the Plan

ESPN sports betting

Despite reports that ESPN’s parent company, Disney, is deviating from a strategy that involved promoting its streaming service with exclusive content, many experts still believe the days of seeing the multi-billion dollar company’s sports arm providing sports betting offerings to customers might still be a ways off.

According to a recent report, Disney is shifting away from a strategy that involved promoting its streaming service with exclusive content and is now aiming to maximize its revenue through new licensing arrangements.

It would be in line with this plan to grant a sports betting company the ability to use ESPN content and trademarks since it would be an opportunity to bring in additional income for content that the company is already producing. It’s possible that Disney’s current financial condition will provide enough incentive for the business to eventually go through with such a transaction. On the other hand, there are reasons to believe that such a deal is not going to be finalized in the near future.

ESPN to Engage in Sports Betting

In the first place, ESPN President Jimmy Pitaro stated back in December that the business does not currently have any licensing deals in the works. During the course of the same talk, other revelations concerning the reasons why individuals who are interested in the gaming sector should take Pitaro at his word came to light.

Pitaro noted that he and Disney CEO Bob Iger appreciate providing ESPN content users with a more streamlined experience for wagering on sports. Since ESPN’s main product is video content, now is probably not the best time for this kind of expansion.

To put it another way, online sportsbooks aren’t quite there yet. There is still an unacceptable amount of lag in both the processing of data and the live broadcasting that occurs within sportsbook apps. This was meant to be the defining characteristic of the Fubo Sportsbook. However, incorporating sports betting into the programming in a smooth manner is not yet possible.

Because of this, ESPN is in a position where it can wait until the technology catches up with its expectations. A much less complicated idea would be to allow streaming services like Netflix or Paramount+ to purchase the rights to broadcast additional Disney movies. By themselves, these licensing deals don’t show that an ESPN sportsbook is any closer to being made real.
