Sports Betting Operators Can Start Applying for Licenses in Michigan

The Michigan Gaming Control Board has started accepted online gaming and sports betting license applications from all commercial casino operators and tribes. This move takes the state one step closer to sports betting realization. Operators in the state have already been announcing their partnership deals with casinos.

Board takes steps forward

MGCB executive director Richard S. Kalm commented on the news and said,

“We expect to launch internet gaming and online sports betting by late 2020 or early 2021. The MGCB continues to make progress toward the launch of online gaming by adding forms for operators and vendors.”

The board will also be accepting vendor registration applications from firms that aim to work as supporting operators and suppliers. The application forms and related guidelines are available on the agency’s websites. Kalm said that the operators should also file applications soon. This would help the board conduct investigations soon and work with them on internal controls. They will also work on lab certifications and technical standards.

He said that all suppliers and operators must encourage their vendors to complete and submit registration forms as well. If all participants submit their applications on time, it will be likely that all are prepared and qualified for launch. The board has been accepting licensing forms for online gaming since May 15.

What is the Michigan gaming market all about?

The Michigan gaming market will include online casinos, mobile sports betting, and poker. It would also make provisions for retail sportsbooks at three Detroit-based commercial casinos.  The first sports bets in the state were placed in March after Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the state’s gambling bill into law in December 2019.

Gov. Whitmer has also delayed phase five of the reopening because of the rising number of coronavirus cases in the state. There is considerable activity in the gambling sector. Kambi, global sports betting supplier, recently partnered with the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi tribe. It would bring sports betting to three Four Winds Casinos in Hartford, Dowagiac, and New Buffalo. Rush Street Interactive has also partnered with Little River Casino Resort while DraftKings has partnered with Bay Mills Resorts & Casino.
