Tribal Leaders in California Express Concern over Betting Measures of Rivals

Tribal leaders in California have stated that the more ideas that are generated with respect to sports betting, the more it is likely that the ideas will not be good. The Golden State’s tribal gaming industry representatives gave their view on the sports betting situation on the first day of the Global Gaming Expo that is being held in the state of California.

Sports betting measure

Tribal entities already have a sports betting measure that is to be put to the voters on the ballet of the November 22 general election. There are two more measures that are being reviewed by officials in the state. These two proposals could be circulated by the backers of these measures and put before the voters in thirteen months after a review by the state officials. The state of California has a population of nearly 40 million people. This makes the state the largest market for sports betting in the United States. This is a big reason why there will be intense competition to offer products to the public.

History of voting in California regarding sports betting

Pechanga Development Corp. Vice President of Public and External Affairs, Jacob Mejia stated before an audience at the Venetian Expo that the tribal nations in the state had presented gaming measures to the voters nine-time since 1998. Eight measures out of nine have passed.

The only measure that did not pass was in 2004. Competing measures between commercial and tribal gaming were put before the voters. Neither measure had come even close to passing. After the conference, Mejia commented to Casino.org that for anybody who wants to vote for the legalization of sports betting in the state of California, three would be a crowd. State leaders have certified a petition drive earlier in the year. The drive had started in early 2020.  James Silva, Chairman of the California Nations Indian Gaming Association stated that in case the initiative was taken up in 2020, today, the conversation would have been extremely different.
