Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment is a Tohono O’odham Nation enterprise that has been in the gambling and entertainment sector for almost 30 years, commencing in 1985 with the opening of Papago Bingo in the Tucson area. Desert Diamond Casino opened its doors on Nogales Highway in 1993. Six years later, in Why, Arizona, a smaller facility was opened. 

Desert Diamond Casinos’ third location, in Sahuarita, opened in 2001. The former casino on Nogales Highway was decommissioned in 2007 and replaced by a new casino, hotel, and convention center complex. The fourth Desert Diamond Casino – West Valley opened in Glendale, Arizona, on December 20, 2015.

The Desert Diamond Sahuarita sportsbook was located in the sports bar section, and wagering is available via sleek electronic kiosks. Large televisions with betting lines and information on various sports have been mounted on the walls above. Arizona authorized retail and mobile sports betting in September, but the regulatory procedure to create retail sportsbooks is lengthy.

The Kambi Group has signed a multi-channel partnership with the Desert Diamond Casinos of the Tohono O’odham Nation, which will benefit from Kambi’s online and on-property sportsbook offerings. The Tohono O’odham Nation was one of ten Arizona Indian tribes granted a sports betting license in August 2021, ahead of the market’s September debut.

“Sports betting has spread rapidly across the country. And it’s still early for us,” CEO Mike Bean said following the Sahuarita location’s ribbon-cutting ceremony. “It was critical for us to compete and give this additional facility.” Last month, Casino del Sol established Tucson’s first retail sportsbook, SolSports. Both casino brands are also developing mobile sports betting applications.

“While most of the end product that you see around us is the front end, there is a lot of ‘back of the house,’ dealing with regulatory compliance. Tohono O’odham Gaming Management Board Chairman Justin Manuel explained. A great deal of negotiation. There is a great deal of coordination required to bring the leadership together. Not only for our tribe, but all of Arizona’s tribes,” stated Wavalene Saunders, Vice Chairwoman of the Tohono O’odham Nation.

Manuel characterized the launch as a “win-win” situation for the tribe and the surrounding community. Not only do sports bettors now have a new site to wager while watching games, but the Tohono O’odham Nation believes the revenue will result in new jobs and other critical improvements to tribal grounds.

“More scholarships, expanded services addressing other needs within our Nation’s borders in the areas of health care, law enforcement, fire protection, and education,” Saunders stated. “You name it, the requirements exist.”

Desert Diamond Casinos reopened its Sahuarita and Tucson sites for 24-hour gambling last month, the first time since the outbreak began.
