California sports betting: cardrooms remove “misleading” – NAACP

California‘s legalization of sports betting continues to get more complicated. Parties opposing Proposition 26, which would legalize retail sportsbooks at Indian casinos and state-licensed racetracks, have omitted an NAACP quotation from ballot arguments.

NAACP

After the Organization Filed a Lawsuit

NAACP deemed the comment “deceptive and improper” while “fully supporting” Prop 26. The case against Prop 26 included the now-removed comment that it opposes Prop 26 to prevent young people from developing lifetime gambling addictions that lead to damaged money, relationships, homelessness, and criminality.

Minnie Hadley-Hempstead, retired teacher and Los Angeles NAACP Branch President Emeritus, said it. The California-Hawaii State Conference of the NAACP sued the No on 26 ballot initiative on August 2 for “deceptive and improper use” of its name.

The NAACP supports Prop 26, and the complaint claimed the ballot arguments were “false and deceptive” and violated the organization’s trademark rules.

In addition, the Los Angeles NAACP Branch does not have a “President Emeritus” post. “Taxpayers Opposing Special Interest Monopolies” cited the disputed quotation in a declaration against Prop 26. It was in a state-published voter’s handbook regarding Nov. 8 ballot measures. The organisation has agreed to the NAACP’s demand rather than having a court decide.

Cardrooms in the state oppose Prop 26, which they say will give tribal casinos a gaming monopoly. The bill would authorize sports betting, dice games, and roulette at tribal casinos. Cardrooms say this bill allows tribal casinos and other groups to sue them for illegal gambling.

Tribal gambling enthusiasts believe cardrooms have nothing to worry about as long as they operate legitimately. Cardrooms have lost the chance to use the NAACP phrase, but they found friends in animal welfare groups last week. Prop 26 would provide retail sportsbooks to California’s four state-licensed racetracks. “Taxpayers Against” released a statement containing quotations.

Sports Betting Operators Also Making Moves

Proposition 27 legalizes statewide online sports betting and redirects tax money to homelessness. It’s supported by a consortium of big sportsbook providers, including DraftKings and FanDuel.

All gaming interests have ramped up campaigning and lobbying with fewer than 100 days to the referendum. This might be California’s most costly election ever. Last week, gambling businesses ran a contentious commercial that attacked “rich tribes with enormous casinos” for wanting “all the money” from sports betting. Tribes in California branded the action “despicable” and an assault on tribal leaders.
