Missouri’s Legalization Of Sports Betting Is In Limbo

According to a report published by the St. Louis Dispatch on Monday, Governor Mike Parson has thwarted the Missouri House’s efforts to legalize sports betting. 

It was anticipated that the subject would be addressed during a special session called by the governor to find a solution to the dwindling tax revenue. 

However, according to Kelli Jones, the Governor’s spokesman, legalizing sports betting was not on the agenda for the special session. 

In addition, the spokeswoman stated that she does not anticipate the legalization of sports betting to be included in the special session called by Governor Parson.

Missourians Attempt to Bet Using Kansas Applications

In March, the House of Representatives enacted HB 2502, a bill that will legalize retail and mobile sports betting. Then, last week, HB4, a similar bill calling for the legalization of the behavior, was introduced. Rep. Dan Houx’s plan was discussed last week, but this week it was tabled. Currently, there is no scheduled hearing for HB4.

It’s not surprising that Missouri politicians want to legalize and tax sports betting. Kansas, a neighboring state, approved the activity in May of this year. On September 1, the state opened its legal and internet retail operations. 

Iowa, Missouri’s other neighbor, introduced sports betting in 2019 in contrast. Arkansas, which launched its retail operations in July 2019 and online sports betting in March of this year, also offers legal sports betting.

It is not just the money stream that will be created by legalizing sports betting that motivates politicians to move forward with the measures. Numerous sports fans are interested in the game and looking for wagering opportunities. 

A report issued earlier this month found that approximately 16,000 Missourian efforts to wager on sports betting applications in Kansas were denied. The primary vendor of location detection software, GeoComply Solutions, said on September 1 that it has prevented these attempts. Undoubtedly, this reinforces Missourians’ desire to wager on sports.
