Fostering the Next Generation of Scientists

DraftKings has agreed to become the only sponsor of KRI’s Military Research Associate Program (MRAP). It aims to help transitioning veterans of military duty into advanced training in public mental health research, and to provide KRI with multi-year financing.

Chrissy Thurmond, senior director of Responsible Gaming at DraftKings, considers it an honor for the Boston-based gaming and technology company to support “the future generation of researchers while educating veterans for new jobs. 

Thurmond cited prior support given under the corporate social responsibility program to KRI’s research aimed at bridging the information gap regarding problem gambling among veterans. DraftKings has a long history of assisting the military community through its Tech for Heroes initiative and S.E.R.V.E.S. corporate social responsibility program.

By teaching participants academic skills such academic writing, literature search and review, study design, and resume research and development, the MRAP of KRI hopes to inspire more former service members to work in mental health research and treatment. It also publishes peer-reviewed publications.

Give Veterans a Say in Mental Health Matters

Nathan Smith, Ph.D., the executive director of KRI, was pleased to collaborate with DraftKings “on this one-of-a-kind program” because he believes that no one understands mental health issues better than military veterans. 

This program provides training and assistance for transitioning military members into public mental health practitioners, he stated, emphasizing that the program’s goal is to give “those who served in the armed forces a voice in the topic of veteran mental health for future generations.”

Participants are required to develop the abilities necessary to continue their education at the graduate level, and they must publish at least one academic paper in a peer-reviewed journal and present a poster or give a presentation at an academic conference in the first year of the program.

In an effort to gather evidence-based research in the area and enhance the lives of military service veterans impacted by gambling harm, DraftKings and KRI established a partnership in 2021 when the Boston-based operator announced a multi-year financial commitment to support KRI’s research in the field of problem gambling among veterans under the 50x4Vets program.

As part of its S.E.R.V.E.S corporate social responsibility initiative, DraftKings also shows its support for those who have served in the military by offering training to active-duty, retired, and spouses of veterans as well as giving them access to its Tech for Heroes Program, which lets them explore careers in technology.
